Commitment & Willpower
What works best?
Do you need willpower to succeed? YES and NO.
Do you need commitment to succeed? YES.
Do you need skills and resources to build the foundations of willpower and commitment. YES
If all you needed was willpower you would have stopped smoking. Here’s what the American Psychological Association has to say about willpower …
“Many people believe they could improve their lives if only they had more of that mysterious thing called willpower. With more self-control we would all eat right, exercise regularly, avoid drugs and alcohol, save for retirement, stop procrastinating, and achieve all sorts of noble goals. Take, for example, the results of the American Psychological Association’s annual Stress in America Survey. The survey asks, among other things, about participants’ abilities to make healthy lifestyle changes. Survey participants regularly cite lack of willpower as the No. 1 reason for not following through with such changes.”
Willpower is the ability to resist short term temptations
in order to meet long term goals.
Willpower researcher Roy Baumeister describes several steps necessary for achieving a goal, like quitting smoking. Here is a summary of his steps, with my comments.
1. You need to establish the motivation for change
That is why I use the Prepare To Quit Workbook and Online Survey. Preparation is crucial. Understanding why you want to stop smoking, your reasons, is important.
2. Set a clear goal.
That’s easy, you want to stop smoking. Nothing could be clearer, other than the air you breathe. When you quit smoking, you’ll breathe easy forever.
3. Monitor your behavior toward that goal.
I use the SMS texting to monitor your smoking habit from the time you enter the program. That way you know and I can keep track of your success.
4. Willpower
Call it willpower, call it commitment. It can be depleted, it can be built up. In order to resist “the temptations” that naturally happen, I provide you with simple effective skills and techniques that work. That puts you in control.
My Commitment
Every person has their own unique situation and set of reasons for wanting to be smoke free. Standard programs or CDs or mp3s or Apps are designed for a standard client, not for you. That’s not you. You need your own program. Providing a program that can be personalised supports you and your unique situation. In order to monitor the progress of all participants, I limit the number in the program at any time. I provide the program and resources necessary for you to stop smoking, quit now and be smoke free forever.
Your Commitment
Your commitment while in the program is to read, listen to or watch the content sent to you (usually it only takes a few minutes). You commit 20 minutes a day to do the Session for that week. You do a relaxation session with guided imagery. You relax and become calm, confident, focused and in control. You commit to text me each day the number of cigarettes smoked the day before (or when your vape runs out) and commit to use the simple mind techniques I teach you.
Now that’s a great deal!
Less time than it takes to smoke 5 cigarettes or vapes.
And you end up smoke free forever! Each day, I send you a motivational text message and you text back your daily smoking habit. This way we both keep track of the changes in your smoking habit. I want you to succeed, so I monitor each client individually.
