Prepare To Quit
How To Succeed
PREPARING TO QUIT
is the FIRST STEP
to ensure your SUCCESS
When I first meet a client, they need to answer some questions for themselves.
Why do I want to quit?
Why do I smoke (or vape)?
What do I get out of smoking (or vaping)?
What does smoking/vaping represent to me?
How do I feel about quitting?
When do I want to stop?
Why have I stopped and started again?
Do I have what it takes?
How can I make sure it works this time?
You may have asked yourself these questions. You will have time to think and reflect on your answers, something my clients can’t do in a personal session. My clients were on the spot, so you have an advantage.
I created the Prepare To Quit Guides to give you the insight you need to have control over your decision to quit smoking. Quitting is about preparation, embracing the potential to create change in your circumstances (a growth mindset) and choosing a technique that works for you.
Quitting is about preparation,
mindset and technique.
The Prepare To Quit Guides (one for SMOKING, one for VAPING) are available FREE as a PDF download. You can use the Guide to prepare yourself, just as I would help a client in a clinical setting. Preparation is the first step to quitting. Use it to understand your unique situation and then decide on the best method to help you to become smoke free forever.
STEP 1 : Download the Prepare To Quit Guide.
STEP 2 : Make notes as you read the Guide.
STEP 3 : You will be ready to STOP smoking.
STEP 4 : QUIT using a technique that suits you.
Planning and Preparation
Planning and preparation are common themes. Without any evidence to be found, Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying “Failing to plan, is planning to fail“. No one really plans to fail, but many fail to plan.
Be Prepared is the motto of the Scouting Association worldwide. Baden-Powell founded the Scouts wrote that to be prepared means “You are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty”.
The Prepare To Quit Guides are an extension of my work with individual clients. Each guide allows you to become very clear about your smoking story, your personal reasons for quitting, and any problem areas you have around quitting. During individual sessions, I discuss these issues with my client.
You will have time to think
and reflect on your smoking habit,
to discover your “why” you are quitting.
With that insight you gain personal insight,
then choose “when” and “how” to become smoke free.
The Guide is like sitting with your therapist to assist them in providing a tailored program for you. The truth is that you do all the problem solving and make all the changes. That is why this work is so effective. It’s personal, it comes from your experience, your background, your reasons, your goals. It’s all about you.
You realise it is you who is in control. This creates a sense of empowerment and achievement second to none. A therapist is a facilitator, a guide, a support person, an expert with the experience, skills and resources you need.
You realise it is you who is in control.
You have the power to make the choice,
to choose to become smoke free.
Personalising Your Sessions
I developed these programs to replace the one-to-one consultations, to personalise your sessions and stay connected with me so I could understand your progress. In the first Personal Session, I discuss your insights from reading and working through the Guide and address any concerns you might have. I use our time to gain insight and any additional information I need to personalise and record your first session and help you create your unique program. In the second Personal Session, I check on your progress, record your second session and discuss how you will customise the next few weeks to match your personal situation. SMS texts are used to provide you with daily contact (via a motivational message) and monitor your progress (via your reporting your smoking habit each day). This sense of connection, continuity and accountability has turned out to be extremely valuable to clients.
Personalisation is key to your SUCCESS.

What About the Health Benefits?
Many people mention the health benefits of being smoke free. Here is a summary from the World Health Organisation. If you are a smoker stopping around 30, you add about 10 years to your life; around 40, add 9 years and at 50, add 6 years. Imagine that, extra time, for free, just by being smoke free.
You’ll notice also that some of the effects are immediate and are focused on directly measurable health benefits (like having less Carbon Dioxide in your lungs). Consider the lifestyle changes, the confidence, the taste and smell of food, increased fitness .. the extra time …..
Here is a table based on the World Health Organization summary in their Tobacco Free Initiative.
