The STOP QUIT NOW Story
The Short Story
You want to stop smoking or vaping. Perhaps you have tried before. Perhaps you stopped for a while. Perhaps you have tried “everything”. Perhaps you stopped then started again when there was a major stress in your life.
These are the stories I heard again and again. Over 30 years I developed a successful approach to help clients quit smoking forever. I tracked clients over the years, received referrals from many and celebrated the success they achieved.
But …
Many people found it difficult to free up the time and money to come to individual sessions. Many people had invested hundreds, even thousands of dollars already in multiple attempts to quit.
I knew I needed to create something more than one-to-one sessions. I trialed Skype, email, online surveys, videos, CDs, mp3 downloads, SMS, MMS, webinars, hangouts, apps, accountability partners and peer support. These ideas seemed innovative back then, but how times have changed. I tried them separately and in combination. I reviewed the research available on remote therapeutic interventions.
I wanted to know if it was possible to incorporate online services for my clients. I figured out what worked and what didn’t work for my clients. I trialled aspects of the program during post graduate research studies in behavioural psychology. Then I refined it.
I created a program that could be tailored to address the key issues faced by smokers, then adjusted it for vaping, without you hem having to come to my clinic. The key to the success of the program was being able to personalise the sessions, maintain continuity and provide support.

I was surprised. What I did worked better than one-to-one sessions; better than one gruelling 3 or 4 hour session; better than groups; better than CDs or mp3 files alone.
The feedback I got was that the program is better, faster and easier:
- convenient (no travel or parking);
- private (just you and your phone, no time off work, no excuses to employers);
- cost effective (compared to 3-4 personal sessions);
- more connected due to SMS and email contact; and
- empowering (you really can take all the credit).
No drugs required.
Just a mobile phone
and the desire to be smoke free.
I spent several years refining the program. Newly developed Apps and Software made it more practical and convenient for my clients. I was able to incorporate the new technologies to develop an online version, allowing people to STOP SMOKING or VAPING, QUIT NOW and be SMOKE FREE FOREVER.
