What’s Stopping You?
Let’s figure it out.
It’s a common story.
I want to … but …
In my work with smokers, it goes something like this: “I want to stop smoking, I want to quit now, but something is stopping me, something is holding me back.”
So what is stopping you?
I don’t want you to pay too much attention to the surface level answers, like:
I can’t afford the program … or
My friends all smoke and they’ll abandon me … or
I always smoke when I have a drink … or
The cravings and withdrawal will overwhelm me … or
I have an addictive personality … or
I’ve tried and failed before … or
I’m just not ready yet …
These reasons are important to you, I know that. From my perspective, their real value is in allowing you to go deeper to find out the real answers to your question.
The next step is to “go beyond” the surface question. Ask yourself why “smoking” is important to you, or how “smoking” makes you feel, then keep doing the same thing to every new answer. Let’s take the first example: I can’t afford the program.
YOU: I can’t afford the program.
ASK YOURSELF: Why do I say that? / How do I feel about that?
YOU: It’s not really the truth, cigarettes cost more over time.
ASK YOURSELF: Why do I say that? / How do I feel about that?
YOU: I hate how much I spend on something that makes me unhealthy.
ASK YOURSELF: Why do I say that? / How do I feel about that?
YOU: I guess I don’t value myself. Wow, that was hard to admit.
ASK YOURSELF: Why do I say that? / How do I feel about that?
YOU: I’m going to start valuing myself. I’m going to spend money on my health and lifestyle.
ASK YOURSELF: Why do I say that? / How do I feel about that?
YOU: I feel great about myself and my future. I want to ENROL NOW.
Now this isn’t exactly how it goes, but it’s not far off. When you dig a little deeper you can find out more about what is really going on. This isn’t the place or time for therapy. It shows how helpful it is to reflect on what is holding you back. The aim is to gain insight at a deeper level. That way you can move forward with knowledge and in strength.
It helps to reflect on what is holding you back.
How do I achieve this when I work with clients individually?
More importantly, how do I create this opportunity in the STOP QUIT NOW Program?
